How to Use Imagery to Quiet the Mind

As you know (if you’ve found yourself to this blog) it is so important to take time to care for our minds. To quiet the noise that we become immune to. (How interesting that our immunity to disease is weakening, while our immunity to distraction is strengthening). One of the many lessons I took from my visit to Peru, was that when we stop asking so many questions, when are mind is quiet, our desperate search for answers ends. And suddenly, just with a shift of perception, things become peaceful and still. In the stillness, away from the noise, is where we find insight. 

The use of imagery is a powerful way to trigger peaceful feelings that have been imprinted into our biology from previous experience. It takes us back to places and times when we felt most connected and most at ease. 

If you want to practice imagery:

  1. Sit in a quiet space, it doesn’t matter where. It could be your couch, your bed, your office chair, on a rock outside or wherever. Imagery goes everywhere. It is available to you anytime.
  2. Next, think of a place you visited where you felt good, calm, happy, content or all of the above. It could be any place, this is your image and your feeling.
  3. Think of that place from each of your 5 senses. How did it LOOK, SMELL, SOUND, FEEL and TASTE? Be creative and detailed! Rain has a smell. Salty air has a taste. Ground below your feet has a feel.
  4. Spend as much time as possible going through each sense one by one. You can spend 2 minutes or 20 minutes doing this. Do what feels right with the time you have. (You may find you don’t want to leave).

If you want, add some music or a video like these below. Sound triggers our memory. It brings us back to the place we may have heard that same song. Visuals trigger our memory as well. They bring us back to the look of the place we were.

Notice how our memories are linked to our senses? This is why we want to fully explore our memories from these different perspectives.

Here are some of the most beautiful and captivating pieces of auditory imagery that I love. They help quiet my mind, and bring me back to that feeling of connection to that state of feeling peaceful and content.
